Navajo Small Rawhide Rattle with a Kokopelli Design.
Hand-crafted and hand-painted by Navajo artist Myrick Morgan.
The rattle handle is decorated with hand painted design, a metal bead and metal wrapped horse hair.
Kokopelli is the hump backed flute playing deity traditional to the Hopi. He is also recognised and revered by the Navajo, Zuni and Anasazi nations. He is a fertility symbol bringing seeds and rain in his sack (the origin of his humped back) for healthy crops.
This Navajo depiction plays down the hump and brings more of the energy of the musician another aspect of the Kokopelli. The music he plays changes the winter to spring, cause seeds to sprout and brings good fortune to all who listen to his songs.
These rattles are very well made with the head firmly attached to the handle and they have a good sound. Each one does vary slightly but the video will give you an idea of how they sound.
Use as a percussion instrument or for ceremonial purposes
Measures approx 19cm excluding the plaited rawhide hanger.
The head is approx 4.5cm in diameter.
All our Navajo products are authentic items purchased from a local business trading on Navajo Nation land in New Mexico.
