Painted Medicine Shield
Hand crafted by Navajo Artist Gene George from Sweetwater, Arizona who is shown on the tag.
Made from soft deerskin leather painted with a unique design and decorated with feathers and metal beads.
Traditionally a Medicine Shield would have acted as a warrior’s physical & spiritual protection. ‘Medicine’ means having sacred and powerful energy. It would have been made from cured buffalo rawhide, a really tough material.
Each warrior created his own shield following a vision quest and would incorporate elements that were relevant to him (often relating to his personal power animal - fur, bone etc.), painted with symbols and decorated with feathers, shells fabric etc.
Use this mini-shield as a base to personalise with pieces that relate to yourself and your journey.
Measures approx 10cm (diameter) and 25cm long (excluding the deerskin hanger).
All our Navajo products are authentic items purchased from a local business trading on Navajo Nationland in New Mexico.
